Future
GreenSpace has grown rapidly from six staff in 2001 to 16 in 2007, and we look forward to continued expansion into the future. The organisation has achieved a great deal in its short life, helping to ensure that park and green space issues rise up the public and political agenda.
We are full of plans for the future. The launch of the first professional institute dedicated to park and green space issues, the Institute for Parks and Green Space (IPGS), is an especially exciting time for GreenSpace.
The skills crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing the sector today. We hope that IPGS will start to address this problem by shaping and influencing national, regional and local policy, identifying and promoting good practice, improving education and training to help create skilled park and green space professionals and promoting working in the sector as an attractive career option.
Our climate is changing, with experts predicting that we will see warmer, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers. Parks are essential for offsetting the urban heat island effect as well as providing floodwater storage capacity and this presents issues for future management of green space.
GreenSpace is dedicated to promoting the essential role that parks and green spaces will play as we adapt to climate change and the potential they have for helping to mitigate further climate change.
