GreenSpace North West Events
GSNW has arranged two programmes of learning events to focus on issues members say are most important to them and require support and shared lessons to implement. Our events are very much 'how to' sessions with a mix of speakers and workshop discussions.
The first programme has been to support the Localism Bill and the Big Society agenda covering aspects of the Bill most relevant to parks and Green Spaces. Volunteering has as key role in both philanthropic actions and community led delivery. Further community led service delivery is reinforced under the Bill and an event represented the many case studies of transferred services under licence and lease arrangements. Asset Transfers to community ownership and management supports the Community Right to Buy. Community Forums will undoubtedly have a much larger role to play in local decision making and redesign of service delivery an event covering this will take place in March. As more direction is provided events will follow.
The second programme of events tackles the practicalities of adapting to climate change and climatic changes we are already experiencing in our extreme weather conditions and increased localised flooding across the North West.

Managing Climatic Changes
14 February – Taylor Park, St Helens
This half-day workshop aims to share lessons in managing public risk during extreme weather conditions both in terms of daily reactive management and to plan measures to reduce future risk in adapting to climatic changes, including localised flooding, gale-force wind and icy conditions.Through discussion groups delegates will discuss the methods they have used to manage public risk and share these. A second discussion group session will use a matrix of green space facilities and infrastructure to identify what proactive steps could be taken to manage potential risk and other factors to adapt to climatic / weather extremes.

Green Space within Green Infrastructure to Combat Climate Change
21st February – TBC.
This event aimed at both planners and green space professionals will discuss the role of green space within evidence requirements for Green Infrastructure focussing in particular on its role to combat and adapt to climate change. Green Infrastructure and Green Space Strategies and local policy appear to lack uptake of measures in response to localised flooding, migration of biodiversity and other Climate Change pressures that will impact in which green spaces have a fundamental role to play.Local decision makers will need to consider the function of green spaces and land in more detail prior to management changes, park improvements, change of use or disposal – this event aims to raise awareness of the most fundament issues and help both policy and implementation. It will identify the steps that can be taken and support an action plan through workshop style discussion groups as well as provide links to further resources and evidence.
