| Rain
fails to stop a sunny future for St James’ Garden
The rejuvenated St James’
Garden enjoyed a fun-filled family event on Sunday 19th June.
Organised by the Friends of St James’ Garden, Celebrate
the Heart of Liverpool featured a range of activities including
a circus workshop, tours of the garden, fireworks, and a display
of the proposed glass bridge. The day was kicked off when
the Lord Mayor, Alan Dean, planted an oak tree with local
children.

Robin Riley, of the Friends of St James’ Garden said
"We were delighted with the number of local people who
turned up. The circus workshop did battle with the cathedral
bells as the sun shone. Then the heavens opened with rain
like a monsoon and everybody went home."
Despite the interruption of the downpour, Robin was very
pleased with the success of the event, “We proved what
can be done in a once no-go park.”
All activities at the event were free and gave people a chance
to explore this fascinating site. One of the most popular
activities of the afternoon was the circus workshop. Children
were taught how to juggle, ride a unicycle and walk a tightrope.
Tours of the park were given by the Friends of the garden
and a Park Ranger. It was a chance to learn about the horticulture,
architecture and renovation of the former cemetery, as well
as finding out about the prominent people buried there. Up
in the cathedral, plans for a spectacular glass bridge spanning
the garden, were laid out for local people to discuss.
