| Over 4500 flock to Baxter Park for Celebration
in the Park
Saturday 6 th August saw 4500 people join the Stobswell
Forum and the Urban Rangers to enjoy Celebration in the Park,
at a free event in Dundee’s historic Baxter Park.

A couple of showers didn’t deter the revellers who
turned up in droves to enjoy the range of activities, displays,
sport and music.
Celebration in the Park was opened by special guest, Councillor
Charles Farquhar, Convenor of the Leisure and Arts Department.
Afterwards, Councillor Farquhar commented, “We are
delighted with the success of this years Celebration in the
Park. The event proved to be a fun way in which to bring
people together from all over the city, promoting the regeneration
of the park and creating a vibrant community atmosphere.”
Budding footballers were able to show off their skills
in a street football tournament. The Victorian fair attracted
kids of all ages, whilst stiltwalkers entertained the crowd.
Dundee community groups were able to show everybody else
their work and involve people in their activities. In particular,
dynamic youth group, S Crew 5 displayed their artistic talent
with a collage of the Baxter Park Pavillion incorporating
the changing times since the park was first opened.
The main stage played host to a musical extravaganza. Newstar
Productions, kicked off the proceedings with their fantastic
revue show, belting out everybody’s favourite songs
from musicals. The Dundee Diamonds followed with covers of
chart hits, while Here with Ziggy and Non Zero got the crowd
rocking.
The Woodlands Dance Orchestra performed some classics,
and the Samba Band, fresh from Glastonbury Festival had everybody
dancing. And what better way to finish Celebration in the
Park, with the King himself – Elvis topped off a memorable
day.
Jim Cochrane, Chairperson of the Stobswell Forum commented, “A
great day was had by all. Stobswell Forum would like to thank
everyone involved in the day, especially the local community,
residents for their support, GreenSpace and the City Council.
The celebration was well attended and was represented by
a wide variety of stalls.”
Celebration in the Park inspired people to discover more
about the history of Baxter Park and celebrate its ongoing
restoration. The event was organised by the Stobswell Forum
and Dundee City Council . It was funded by the Heritage Lottery
Fund as part of the national Park It! programme which is
organised by GreenSpace.
