Basingstoke, Hampshire
As a result of an action point arising from the 1996 parks strategy, the council conducted an open space audit for the larger conurbations in the borough in 1998, as part of the Basingstoke and Deane Local Plan Review. Acting as a crucial management tool, it sought to quantify and qualify for the first time the public open space in the area, forming a comprehensive map. It permitted national and local figures to be compared, making recommendations for reducing the gap and acting as a consistent and invaluable support tool for park managers in the borough.

Doncaster
A comprehensive audit of all public open space was carried out by external consultants for Doncaster MBC in order to provide a framework for decision-making, setting borough-wide standards for strategic planning, that the Council feel will be extremely difficult to challenge. Information was stored on a Geographical Information System (GIS), and the audit formed the basis of the borough’s draft green space strategy.

A comprehensive evaluation of approximately 400 sites in North Huyton, Merseyside, was undertaken to assess current condition and use, and future potential (areas tackled included POS categories, amenity value, conservation strategy, landscape evaluation, common issues, public commitment among others). The SRB-funded project has provided baseline information and a blueprint for Knowsley MBC, for a strategic approach to open space development across the borough.

A survey carried out in 1997 showed that 58% of respondents required improved trails and information. In 1998 staff from the park put together a proposed series of routes and upgrades for the park. The routes were discussed with an adult training centre, the Disabled Ramblers Association, the over 50’s walking groups and the Women’s Walking Group. Together these groups feed into the overall design and functionality of the proposed route. The trail was installed in 1999 along with a number of interpretation boards, maps and guides. The project was funded by the National Grid and the Environment Trust for Berkshire and received a fantastic response from the park users.
