GSSW Development Manager
Roger Gates is the Development Manager for the South West region. Roger's key role is to manage the sustainable development of the GSSW forum and thus further enhance the forum's commitment to the parks and green space sector. Department of Communities and Local Government grants enabled the forum to increase the forum manager's post from part-time to full-time in June 2009. This DCLG contribution will be greatly reduced in 2010-11, so increasing the number of regional members and receiving renewals from existing members will be essential to the continuing success of GSSW.

Access to Nature application
GSSW have now submitted its online Stage 2 application for 'Access to Nature'. The project is titled HEALING Projects SW (Health, Exercise, Art & Learning In Natural Green Space).
If successful, opportunities for over 80,000 people will be achieved in Bournemouth, Cornwall, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. These projects will be delivered in partnership with NHS South West, Forestry Commission, Sustainability South West (Planting Places), Walking the Land arts collective and the participating local authorities and health care providers and community groups. The project will also develop the GreenSpace Regional Forum as a hub for learning and dissemination.
If the bid is successful, it will improve access and opportunities for learning, creativity and health across the South West region.

Forum membership slightly increases during 2009-10 and campaign seeks further increases
The membership of GreenSpace South West increased slightly during the last year. The main focus of the year was the preparation of the HEALING Projects SW application for 'Access to Nature' funding, with members actively involved in the application submission.
The established local authority membership has laid down a solid foundation from which the Forum can push forward its own agenda over the coming years. However even with the slight increase, the percentage of local authorities who are members of the Regional Forum stands at around 40% and it remains a priority for the Forum to increase the membership over the next couple of years to around 66% to make the Forum financially sustainable.
Forum Chair, Peter Wilkinson, says: "Whilst the injection of Central Government funding is to be welcomed, the Forum members would rather that other local authorities and organisations join us in order to provide enough core funding to safeguard our future. The funding we have recently secured here in the south west has to be seen as an opportunity to grow our membership and take action ourselves to further the many benefits of green spaces and parks. Please join us."
